Flowchart

Procedure

    • NTRLBU must monitor groundwater in monitoring wells to coincide with groundwater level maximum and minimum (generally September and April). [RM975261 - D(12)]

    • Receive notification that groundwater monitoring is required. [MS - Notification method yet to be established]

    • An Analysis Request must be submitted to Hill Laboratories Ltd (mail@hill-labs.co.nz). The Analysis Request needs to set out:

      • The name and contact details of NTRLBU.

      • The purchase order number.

      • The number of samples and the analysis required for each (see below).

      • The date and time of the request.

      • The name and signature of the requestor.

    • The Groundwater minimum (generally April) analysis required: [RM975261 - D(12)]

      • MW3 - Tier 1

      • MW4a - Tier 1

      • MW4b - Tier 2

      • MW5a - Tier 1

      • MW5c - Tier 2

      • MW10 - Tier 1

      • MW10b - Tier 1

      • MW11 - Tier 1

    • See Tier 1 & Tier 2 Sampling Table below for required analysis lists.

    • On receiving the Analysis Request, Hill Laboratories will send the required sample bottles with labels to NRTLBU.

    • The Groundwater maximum (generally September) analysis required: [RM975261 - D(12)]

      • MW3 - Tier 1

      • MW4a - Tier 1

      • MW4b - Tier 2

      • MW5a - Tier 1

      • MW5c - Tier 2

      • MW10 - Tier 1

      • MW10b - Tier 1

      • MW11 - Tier 1

    • See Tier 1 & Tier 2 Sampling Table below for required analysis lists.

    • On receiving the Analysis Request, Hill Laboratories will send the required sample bottles with labels to NRTLBU.

    • Gloves and eye protection must be worn when sampling groundwater.

    • If any groundwater inadvertently spills onto a person, that person should immediately rinse the affected area with clean water.

    • Persons sampling or dealing with groundwater must wash their hands after completing their tasks and before smoking, eating, or drinking.

    • Thermo Fisher Probe (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity).

    • 2 x 5L Jugs

    • Bore Pump

    • Hand Bailer

    • Sample bottles (to be ordered from, and supplied by, Hills Labs).

    • Ice Packs (completed samples need to be kept chilled).

    • Collect groundwater samples at each Groundwater well (MW3, MW4a, MW4b, MW5a, MW5c, MW10, MW10b, MW11). [RM975261 - D(12)]

    • For each well, remove bore hole lid, remove baler, place pump in the bottom of the bore hole (lift pump slightly so it is not sitting on ground as to not stir up sediment)

    • Start pumping until dry (or until 40L has been pumped), water from pumping is to be put in the 5L containers – counting each container to be able to complete calculation. The last 2 Full containers of pumped water are to be kept to be tested.

    • Use the Thermo Fisher Probe to measure:

      • temperature

      • pH

      • electrical conductivity

    • Record the values in Survey 123.

    • Take a photo of the sample (which will be used to fill the sample bottles) in the 5L Container in front of the location (to be kept as a record in case there are any questions once the test results are received).

    • Use the bailed groundwater to fill each labelled sample bottle (provided by the testing laboratory) which are identified by a label on each of the bottles for each of the locations.

    • Ensure the bottles are filled right to the top with no air bubble. Carefully attach the lid and ensure the bottle is well sealed.

    • Once filled and capped wipe each sample bottle and place in a clean plastic bag to minimise the potential of contamination of other samples.

    • Write the time of sample and date on the bottle labels and put in the box to be kept chilled with the ice packs and boxed (completed samples need to be kept chilled).

    • Immediately after sampling, Complete the Chain of Custody form provided by the testing laboratory and send the chilled sample box by courier to Hill Laboratories Ltd .

    • Lab address and phone number:

      • 1/17 Print Place, Middleton
        Christchurch 8042

        0508 HILL LAB (0508 44 555 22)

    • The samples are analysed by Hill Laboratories Ltd and results forwarded to the NTRLBU representatives and copied to specialists engaged by NTRLBU as appropriate.

    • Data is uploaded via an Excel spreadsheet saved in SharePoint Folder (TBD) by T&T and/or NTRLBU as part of the annual monitoring reporting requirements.

[GS & MS - We need to build out the data recording and analysis part of this procedure]

    • Report to the NCC Compliance Officer within two months of sampling. [RM975261 - D(12)]

    • All data is reported on in the Annual Monitoring Report by 31 October each year. [RM975261 - Sch 1 (18)]

[GS - The consent does not appear to require any analysis of results or set any limits. It just requires reporting. But there must be acceptable limits and someone must be comparing the results with these limits. Is this all done by the NCC water scientist of does NTRLBU have a role here?]
